He was born in Kamenetz-Podolsk (правильный румэйнер! :tease: * )

In April 1906, he emigrated to the United States with his parents, sisters and brother. After being released from the Ellis Island Immigrant station they proceeded to Philadelphia, where they settled. They were naturalized in 1913. Tracy's parents became known as Morris and Fannie Tracy.

Arthur graduated from Central High School in 1917 and began singing part-time in the Yiddish theatre, before switching to vaudeville. Between jobs he helped the family out by working as a furniture salesman.

He became a headliner in the early 1920s in vaudeville appearing with such stars as Will Rogers and W.C. Fields and toured nationally in a musical about the life of Franz Schubert, "Blossom Time."

By 1930 Arthur Tracy had gained wider popularity singing on CBS radio, where he was billed as "The Street Singer." He had shows on the air several times a week and his records sold in the millions.

Once asked how he became known as The Street Singer he claimed he had sung in the streets of Philadelphia for pennies. One of his most enduring hits was the song "Pennies from Heaven"
